The use of hemp can be traced back to 8000 BC in the Middle East and China where the fibre was used for textiles, ropes and fishnets.
Hemp fibres are one of the longest natural soft fibres, with eight times the tensile strength of cotton and four times the durability. They are also more absorbent, more mildew-resistant and better insulating than cotton.
This sustainable super-plant grows very quickly (around 100 days) and is great for the environment – detoxifying the soil by removing harmful chemicals and pollutants, and enriches the soil with nitrogen and oxygen.
Cotton, on the other hand, takes a tremendous toll on the soil and the cotton industry is currently responsible for more than 10% of the world’s pesticides and nearly 25% of the insecticides. Cotton is one of the most thirsty crops, which depletes our limited freshwater supply. By contrast, hemp will produce around 2-3 times as much fibre per acre compared to cotton, and require only around a fifth of the water.
Hemp textile breathes very well, offers UV protection, is naturally anti-bacterial, and best of all…. improves with use!
Did You Know?
King Henry VIII declared a law stating that land-owners in Britain had to set aside at least 1/4 of an acre out of every 60 acres to cultivate hemp, which would be used for ropes, nets, sails and other navy equipment
